Exhibition Statement
The Visual Poetry Exhibition presents an opportunity for Delta College alumni artists to exhibit artwork based on the theme of poetry. The scope of poetry is broad, and includes free verse, haiku, sonnet, spoken word, acrostic, ode villanelle, limerick, elegy, ballad, monologue poetry, musical lyrics, and excerpts from literature. Artists chose either to create artwork inspired by their own writing, or that of another author’s published work. Excerpts from the written word, including the author’s byline, is included with the artists’ work statements. Fourteen alumni artists were selected by the Horton Gallery Committee, comprised of the full-time Studio Art Faculty and Gallery Coordinator, to exhibit their work.
In addition, 10 current students from the studio and multimedia arts programs were also invited to exhibit by participating in a Book Art and Poetry Workshop and exhibiting the resulting project. To foster the process of creating artwork inspired by poetry, alumni artists were also invited to participate in the workshops. Two book art workshops were funded by the Gallery, with two of the alumni artists engaged as the instructors, Kat Castaneda (Travel Concertina Book Art) and Tiffany Pech (Flower Fold Book Art). In addition, a poetry workshop was presented by Delta College English Professor and poet, Gabrielle Myers.
