Visual Poetry: Alumni & Current Student Artists
Madelyn Stewart
Madelyn Stewart is currently working on getting her AA in Graphic Arts and is planning on exploring 3D Art/Animation and Programming in the future.
The content of my book art is inspired by the poem, Reflections by R.S. Thomas, found in my favorite video game, Disco Elysium. The game involves playing a detective who must solve a murder after losing all of his memories. I fell in love with the game’s beautiful writing, unique characters, and insanely detailed lore. While I can’t fully capture the depth of this game and how much it means to me, I wanted to represent my passion for gaming through these little collages! The pages in my book art displays the skill that chimes in during the game along with my favorite quote from each of them.

Reflections - R.S. Thomas
The furies are at home
in the mirror; it is their address.
Even the clearest water,
if deep enough can drown.
Never think to surprise them.
Your face approaching ever
so friendly is the white flag
they ignore. There is no truce
with the furies. A mirror’s temperature
is always at zero. It is ice
in the veins. Its camera
is an X-ray. It is a chalice
held out to you in
silent communion, where gaspingly
you partake of a shifting
identity never your own.
