Visual Poetry: Alumni & Current Student Artists
Kat Castaneda, Alumni Artist & Instructor
Kat Castaneda, 33, is an artist and curator from Stockton, California. They work in both book arts and ceramics, blending traditional techniques with their own creative perspective. Over the past seven years, Kat has explored the craft of bookbinding, creating thoughtful, hand-crafted works that are both functional and artistic. Their five years in ceramics have been a journey of learning and experimentation, focusing on texture, form, and glazing to create meaningful pieces.
I found the travel concertina in “How to Make Books” by Esther K. Smith. I wanted to challenge myself to create an artist book of sorts. I don’t do a lot of 2D work as well so that added an additional hurdle. This book structure gave me the ability to create smaller zine-like chapters which add a fun charm to my book. I used mixed media and collage to compose this book.

This book was inspired by a quote from a book called “Eleanor & Park” by Rainbow Rowell.
“She never looked nice. She looked like art, and art wasn’t supposed to look nice: it was supposed to make you feel something.”
