World Language Levels
Which World Language Level Should You Take?
If you have previously studied a World language, you may be able to start at a higher level. Before registering for a World Language class, use the information below to help you determine which level would be most appropriate for you.
Previous Language Coursework
In general, 2 years of High School language is equal to 1 semester at Delta College.

Less than 2 years of high school language | 1 | Spanish 1, French 1, ASL 1, German 1, Chinese 1, Japanese 1, Italian 1 |
At least 2 years of high school language with a grade of “C” or higher | 2 | Spanish 2, French 2, ASL 2, German 2, Chinese 2, Japanese 2, Italian 2 |
At least 3 years of high school language with a grade of “C” or higher | 3 | Spanish 3/*3A, French 3, ASL 3, German 3, Chinese 3, Japanese 3, Italian 3 |
At least 4 years of high school language with a grade of “C” or higher OR: AP Language exam with a passing score on the AP exam |

- To fulfill transfer requirements for CSU General Education, CSU IGETC and UC IGETC, you need a 2nd semester (level 2) course in the language.
- In some cases, a third semester (level 3) of the language may be required. Please check with a counselor for the most up-to-date requirements.
