This 12-week program will prepare students to care for patients with respiratory, cardiac, or trauma emergencies. 

Working as an EMT is a great first step toward becoming a paramedic, fire fighter, psychiatric technician or radiologic technician, among other health-related professions. These jobs are in high demand in the Central Valley. 

No experience is required to sign up for Delta’s EMT program, but you must be 18 years or older by the start date of the program that you apply for.

EMT at Delta

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program prepares students with entry-level skills and knowledge to practice in the role of a EMT in a pre-hospital setting. Students who complete the program will be qualified to take the National Registry EMT Exam (NREMT). After successfully passing the NREMT examination, students will be eligible for an EMT licenses in California. This program is a  one semester course with lecture, skills lab, and clinical observation components.

Getting Started in the Emergency Medical Technician Program

  1. Review all the information about the program on this page. 
  2. Complete and submit an application to San Joaquin Delta College.
    (Be sure to make a note of your Student ID# and to setup your MyDelta Dashboard account / password.)
  3. Submit a Completed EMT Application.
  4. Check your Delta College Student email often.
    (The EMT program will primarily communicate with you through your Delta email address for any updates to your application status.)
  5. You will be notified by email of your acceptance or waitlist position in the program.
  6. Students accepted into the EMT program will receive an EMT Packet to complete.
  7. Student who are invited to join the program MUST accept or decline their spot by the deadline date indicated in the packet.
  8. Packet and clinical clearance must be also completed by the deadline date indicated.
  9. Purchase required textbooks, uniforms and supplies.
  10. Attend class.

Units: 8
Advisories: H ED 31 or H S 36 with a grade of “C” or better.

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course provides students with an understanding of the Emergency Medical System (EMS), identifying medical emergencies, patient assessment process, and emergency medical care presently considered within the scope of practice for an EMT. This course will help prepare students to take the EMT National Registry exam. Upon completion of the National Registry exam, students may be able to find employment in the ambulance field, fire service, or the private sector.

What are the program prerequisites?

There are no prerequisite courses, however all students enrolled in the program must be at least 18 years of age and possess a current health care provider level CPR certificate.

What is a typical schedule?

This is a 12-week program.

  • Lecture is typically two 4-hour sessions a week.
  • Skill labs are one 5-hour session a week.

Each student must complete a minimum of 48 hours of observation.

  • 24 hours in an hospital emergency room.
  • 24 hours with AMR Ambulance.
