Delta College Alumni Exhibition 2024
Neang Narkary
Narkary was first introduced to the beauty of art through coloring books as a toddler. Many of which were typically icons from girlhood such as My Little Pony, Strawberry Shortcake, Barbie Winx Club etc. As a child, she felt that these “girly” things made her seem weak and that she should be embarrassed by anything related to the color pink. This suppression emerges in her works to discuss these childhood symbols that society shunned. She wants to find and reclaim empowerment in feminine urges and fascinations.
Her main mediums are acrylic paints or digitally through Procreate. She specializes in semi-realistic portraits and fantasy themed paintings. She uses symbols, patterns and her latest obsession to create her works.
She took her passions seriously in high school and has since pursued the fine arts through Delta College with an Associates of Arts and Stanislaus State University where she received her Bachelor of Arts.
Now, she plans to grow her social media through her Instagram “narkary.art” where she wants to explore themes of girlhood, feminism and story.
I think being an artist is one of the best ways to learn how to deal with mistakes. There are so many times where I spend hours on a piece and come back to realize I can do better. Printmaking was a difficult process for me to understand, but I am proud of how my angel came out regardless. This was a two layered reductive method from an 8x10 woodblock.
In this piece “Angels Tears” I interpret the trending biblically accurate angels known for their many eyes and wings. They seem to be foreign and feared in their descriptions. I wanted to give a sense of beauty through a feminine figure. I chose the colors yellow and green to symbolize greed. The angel weeping can symbolize many things. The golden tears can be directed at the corruption going on in our materialistic society that uses unethical means to fulfill our needs for the trendiest things. In this aspect, the feminine figure is empathizing with the suffering money can cause. Personally, I wanted the angel to seem ethereal and pitying mortals who have to slave away for money. I hope to explore and interpret other mythical and feminine figures that relate to girlhood and womanhood. The new era of technology makes one crave for the unknown and the wholeness of nature. Currently, I would like to keep exploring the idealization of Ballet and bring forth the dedication of its craft. Most of my artworks will be depictions of my latest obsessions. I hope whoever is reading this would like to follow my artistic journey through my Instagram account: @narkary.art
