Delta College alumni who attended college 2010 – 2020 and have a major or minor in studio arts, graphic arts, or photography were eligible to apply to the 2024 Alumni Art Exhibition. Many alumni have gone on to 4-year colleges to receive their BFA, including from California State Universities at Stanislaus, San Francisco, Sacramento, and San Jose, as well as UC Davis, University of Southern California, and University of the Pacific, and graduate school at Washington State University, Seattle.

The exhibition juror, Daniel “Atta” Seifert, imbed link to name https://yumfactory.com/ selected 39 works made by 21 artists. With a commitment to creating and curating surprising forms of visual art, Atta has forged a varied career, often fusing subversion with disconcerting whimsy. In 2005 artists Annie Owens and Atta co-founded Hi-Fructose magazine , which has become a bestselling art magazine with a global reach. In order to better define the scope of the magazine, New Contemporary Art was added to the masthead in 2009.

Hi-Fructose: The New Contemporary Art Magazine was honored with a ten-year retrospective in 2016, titled Turn the Page: The First Ten Years of Hi-Fructose, which premiered at the Virginia MOCA, and travelled to the Akron Museum of Art in Ohio and the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. Fun fact – the artwork of Delta College alum artist and Stockton native, Tracey Snelling, was part of the retrospective exhibition.

Exhibition Juror’s Statement – Daniel “Atta” Seifert

The work I selected for the alumni show demonstrates the artists’ unique perspectives rather than examples of their direct academic training. It’s interesting to see how respective artists have built upon their studies and training and applied it with their own voice to their work.

Like a good mix-tape from the mid-80s or a modern-day playlist, within this group showing at the Horton Gallery viewers will be presented with different “vibes” which moves them from one “visual track” to another. Whether it’s the steamy, noir-powered drawings by Taylor Wick, the child-like paint application found in Prince Valdez’ "Mystletainn & Pochita,” or the conceptual sculpture of Cory Morrison’s miniature representation of a deforested trail, this show is diverse in themes, mediums and approaches. Some works may give the viewer a meditative visual rest, as they appreciate a work’s subtleties (see Zoe Nelson’s “Close Comfort” and “Leaf Bottle”), while others sneak up on you (I’d provide an example, but that would ruin the fun, right?).

My wish is that an artist find’s their “distinct point of difference” or inner voice as soon as possible. While it can and will surely evolve, once found it will serve as a north star of sorts for the creative — especially during times when an artist isn’t receiving attention, funding, response, or even respect. Once found, it allows the artist to focus on the process of art making in its many forms. The process itself is so much of what we do as artists. It’s the one thing that we can control, or rather, embrace, especially if it goes against prevailing trends in fine art. And I believe it shows in the work.

As co-founders of the publication Hi-Fructose, my wife Annie Owens and I have always looked for this work-defining voice in what we present to our readers and in our shows. As artists ourselves, we know that it takes courage to follow that guiding difference, especially after years of training and degrees and, more so, after commercial success. It’s the risk taking and voice of a fine artist which can sustain their career, stimulate discussion and reach people in unexpected ways.

In a fast-changing visual world, where generating an image that can get near instantaneous response from a scrolling audience is just a few typed prompts away, an artist’s identity and meaningful relationship to their actual practice seems more important than ever.

I think art is necessary and can even be revolutionary for everyone. I believe that art can change the way we respond to and in the world that we live in and how we operate in it. I hope this show and others like it in your community can get you excited to experience the visual arts, and, if you need it, give you permission to seek out more from these artists.
