Delta College Alumni Exhibition 2024
Mia Hill
I am a practicing artist and undergraduate student currently attending Sacramento State University and previously attended San Joaquin Delta College. My major is in Studio Art with interdisciplinary concentrations in ceramics and painting. With my practice, I experiment with functional ceramics, sculptural ceramics, paintings, mixed media collages, and combined worlds of ceramics and painting. I find inspiration through contemporary art, collage, various textures and patterns, and visual inspiration I come across in the studio or just in day-to-day life.
The meaning of my art is to reflect on experiences relating to society, while being vulnerable yet informative, to hopefully relate to others. Topics of gender and societal standards, along with the psyche and physical body, all play integral parts within the content of the work. The organized chaos of the imagery and elements in the work are created to stimulate a sense of uncomfortable familiarity. The point is to capture a scene, experience, or feeling through representation but abstracted expressive means to dramatize the visuals. Facets are created to show the depth and layers of the emotions. The work is in a set perspective with movement of elements to emulate an experience that is alive and breathing. Through the use of bold saturated colors, glitter, and other materials, the goal is to initially grab the attention of the viewer and pull them into the environment. The placement of these colors and reflective materials can represent empowerment and liberation, but also the superficiality and façade of my reality within society. Underneath the surface, the darkness, bleeding colors, and gray tones, reveals a depth that is riddled with anxiety, shame, trauma, and disappointment. The work is meant to evoke feelings of relatability to the viewer or give a different perspective to feel what is alive in my reality.
