I didn’t see myself as an artist when I was younger. I didn’t bother with art until I was 11 and I wanted to prove a boy wrong. He had told me I couldn’t draw a dragon, and I contribute where I am today to that teasing comment. When I started learning art I was using wikihow and YouTube videos, but I soon found that the best teacher is observation. I started to notice little things I hadn’t before, and appreciate details that don’t matter to others. It was only a few years ago that I finally felt confident in pursuing art as a career. I plan on transferring to art school after Delta to get an illustration degree. I wouldn’t have come this far without the encouragement of family and friends who would often tell me that I should do art professionally.

Each of the works I summited are important to me. The first one, “Creative Butterfly” is a playful scene that shows butterflies painting flowers. When I made this it was spring and everything was colorful, but I was missing being able to go on the college campus and see the spring there. The second, “Forgotten Battle” was the first work I was hired to make for someone outside my family. It was my first real experience with being a professional artist and communicating with a client, and I was so happy to see them pleased with the result. The third, “Spring on the Block” is a painting of the trees flowering on my street. When I was walking under the white flowers there was a beauty that a picture didn’t quite capture. I think I managed to capture a sense of it in this painting. I moved recently and whenever I see this I miss my old street.
