Visions In Clay
September 4 - 21, 2018
Steven Osterlund
My current work is Inspired by the individual's relationship with industrial equipment. While the development of new technology celebrated by some, it also frightens and intimidates others. At times in human history, ingenuity leads to temporary successes, with unseen consequences appearing down the line. The solution to one "problem" can lead to an unpredictable repercussion. Reflecting on the current state of the environment and lifestyle of the world's population, the success of humans relationship with their own technology becomes questionable. I am inspired by engines, agriculture equipment, chemical apparatus, and space technology. I am using the ceramic medium and its assumed fragi lity to explore human’s relationship with machines. The importance of ceramic vessels for transportation and storage of resources is often overlooked. Using clay to transcribe the industrial vessels and apparatus brings them into a modern context, with historical roots.
