Visions In Clay
September 4 - 21, 2018
Jan Schachter & Peggy Forman
Jan Schachter and Peggy Forman have been collaborating for over 30 years. These are Peg’s comments.
Thinking of words to express my thoughts on this drawing - and all other drawings on Jan’ s clay pieces, I know that it is our collaboration that forms the foundation of my process. It is the longevity of our relationship and the trust we have in each other that allows me the freedom to do whatever I do. I would be remiss to not mention that it’s fun to ”work together in different studios”.
Another major part of my work is that I do not like to preplan what I draw. I do a lot of figure drawing on paper as a regular element of my artistic life and the drawings that result from this often inspire the beginnings of the clay drawings. When I draw on clay, there are many differences, and challenges, which affect the final results: curved surfaces, materials that dry quickly, glaze materials that are vastly different colors when applied than they will be after firing, and of course, the firing itself creates many surprises (some good, some not). I draw very much in the moment basing what and how I draw very much on what feels right.
For this piece, I used slips and stains as well as glaze pencils and erasers. Jan provided the piece to me bisque fired. I re-fired at cone 05 to ‘set’ the drawing and returned it to Jan for a transparent glaze and cone 10 firing.
