My artwork uses Vessel Oriented Ceramic Objects (VOCOs) that serve as graphic clay canvases. Daily observations and recollections of the past are the springboard for creativity. The VOCOs fuse irreverent wit with a twist of gut-wrenching seriousness and just a touch of parody. The vessels are illustrated and decorated to tell stories and provide commentary about folklore, politics, science, human geography, and most importantly, popular culture.
As an artist and storyteller, I approach my work like a film director, producer and screenwriter. I use elements and principles to utilize many of the signs, symbols and visual cues that we as humans are trained to relate with characteristics or traits we find within people and places: associating different colors with different eras or emotions, intensifying lighting and shadows to heighten awareness, and developing characters to cultivate relationships.
