Visions In Clay 2024
Freddy Santana
Freddy Santana, born in San Francisco, California, is a contemporary ceramicist currently based in Sacramento, California. He is recognized for his innovative approach to stoneware and porcelain, which draws inspiration from his Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage. Santana is best known for the juxtaposition of modern and pre-Columbian imagery, utilizing limited glaze techniques and pre-Columbian-inspired geometric designs that highlight the natural character of exposed clay surfaces.
The subject matter of Freddy Santana’s work embodies an exploration of cultural tradition, emphasizing a dynamic dialogue between historical influences and contemporary expression. His artistic practice reflects his belief that philosophies, forms, and symbolism should encapsulate both his heritage and current identity. He articulates, “philosophies and ideas, the forms and techniques, the images and symbolism reflect both my history and my present. However, I do not seek to replicate tradition, for I am not solely my past. I am the present using modern techniques and materials and struggling with modern themes.” This thematic exploration has led to several important projects and series that resonate with audiences.
Freddy Santana has participated in notable exhibitions such as Rendered Fusion: Clay, Connection, Attention at the NCECA 2024 Annual, Harnett Museum of Art at the University of Richmond, Virginia, and Off Center: An International Ceramic Art Competition at Blue Line Art in Roseville, California. His work has also been included in Grace in Clay at Light Art Space in Silver City, New Mexico, and Celebrando Nuestra Herencia Latinoamericana at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts in San Francisco, California. Additionally, Santana’s contributions to the field have been recognized in the exhibition Roots and Routes: Latin American Perspectives at the Museum of Northern California Art in Chico, California. His artwork is included in various private collections, underscoring his place in contemporary ceramic art.
The artwork explores the concept of looking ahead with hope and contemplation, navigating the challenges and possibilities that lie ahead. I hope to convey a message of optimism and reflection. "Pensando en el Futuro" symbolizes a forward-thinking perspective, inviting viewers to contemplate their own aspirations and concerns for the future. To resonate with cultural diversity, individual interests, and societal priorities, to initiate a deeper understanding and appreciation of our shared human experience.
