Visions In Clay 2023

John Tobin
My main medium is clay with which I use a variety of hand building techniques. Slabs are sheets of rolled or ponded clay; pinch pots are small hand formed bowl-like forms. For larger sculpture I use oriental coiling method. It is a very strong and with experience and practice can be quite fast to construct hollow forms that can become mountains, clouds, or even people:
My subject matter contains people often in humorous situations and I have always been fascinated with wheels, sci-fi and technology. I discovered the joy of working with clay in the 4th grade. It was plasticine (oil-based clay) that could be reused over and over. In class we constructed a diorama of dinosaurs. I was hooked on clay!
Years later when attending Old Dominion University, I again was reacquainted with clay, this time the type that potters use, that comes from the ground. It has to be fired to become permanent. My experience and skill in using this material led me to become the artists in residence for Norfolk Public Schools, I realized how much fun the students were and then I became an art teacher. We (my wife and I) travelled the world teaching locally ad then overseas. Retiring in 2006 I now have more time and a studio to work with clay. Life is Great!
“A Boy and His Dog” was inspired by some of the games on my grandson’s VR. Mostly sinister Eastern European war like scenarios, very troubling and very recent.
