G.V. received a Master of Fine Arts degree in ceramics from U.F. in 2019 and spent several years moving around the country doing long-term residencies. They are currently a studio artist at Marin Ceramics Cooperative in Sausalito, CA. They make figurative ceramic work that explores ideas about non-binary gender through the hybridized animal/human as metaphor, with references to fantasy and science fiction.
I make figurative ceramic sculptures that are a blend of human and animal. These chimeric creatures are metaphors for the complexities of identity. I utilize them to develop my own mythology to challenge sociopolitical binaries, specifically opening a discussion about the gray areas of gender identity. Observing these fantastical sculptures enables viewers to consider the nuances of identity and how one takes normative social tropes for granted. These interactions are catalyzing, and often spark transformative conversations.
