About Stockton, California
Located 45 miles south of Sacramento, Stockton is an ideal home base for exploring world-class destinations like Yosemite National Park, Lake Tahoe, and San Francisco, all of which are less than three hours away by car. The city also sits at the doorstep of the largest river estuary on the west coast of the Americas, with 1,000 miles of waterways and virtually unlimited recreational opportunities.
Stockton itself is a growing city of just over 300,000 people. The city prides itself on its rich agricultural heritage, with a roughly $3 billion farm industry in the surrounding countryside. Under dynamic new leadership, the community is actively seeking opportunities for economic growth in new technology, renewable energy, and other emerging sectors.
It is difficult to imagine a more culturally and ethnically diverse place than Stockton. The 106-year-old Sikh temple located in south Stockton was the first built in the United States and attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year.
Named an All-America City for three of the past four years, Stockton also offers many of the modern amenities found in larger cities. The redevelopment of the downtown waterfront in the mid-2000s led to the construction of a baseball stadium that is home to the Stockton Ports, an affiliate of the Oakland A's. Right next door, the Stockton Arena hosts the Stockton Heat hockey team along with many other events like Disney on Ice and big-name concerts. The city is also home to the Port of Stockton, one of the largest inland ports on the West Coast, where ships from all over the world deliver bulk materials relied upon by agriculture and other industries.
Stockton is remarkable for the efforts of its own citizens to improve the quality of life. Hundreds of government agencies, educational entities like Delta College, nonprofit groups and faith-based organizations are constantly working toward that common goal.
The entire District is enriched by numerous cultural centers and community organizations that celebrate and uplift our diverse populations, such as the Chinese Cultural Society of Stockton, the Mexican Heritage Center, the Japanese American Citizens League, Little Manila Rising, Lao Family Community Empowerment, and the African American Chamber of Commerce.
