Visions In Clay 2019
Ryan Schulz
In one word, my work focuses on escapism. Through consumption, there are myriad of self-regulatory practices we as Americans employ to combat stress in our day to day lives. These vessels are an extension of those practices, at times benign, and at others, completely unsustainable.
The forms undulate and drip in response to the urgency in which we seek the comforts of a satiating indulgence. Like ice cream on a hot summer day, they melt out of balance requesting our immediate and hasty attention to prevent the total collapse of an otherwise enjoyable opportunity. They are the binge personified, embellished with illustrations of fantastical projection. Ultimately every handmade piece of tableware is an invitation to partake in something special, but my pots exist when expectations bloat beyond the reach of a reasonable qualitative experience.
