Visions In Clay 2019
G.V. Kelley
I make figurative ceramic sculptures portraying creatures that are a blend of human and animal. These alien forms are gendered outside of the socialized binary of male and female and are surfaced with bright otherworldly tones and textures, giving a sense of fantasy and pushing the work into the realm of ‘other’. This work explores how science fiction and fantasy can be used as a platform to open a discussion about the taboo nuances of gender identity outside of the prescribed binary. Through these strange, hybridized fantastical sculptures I cause the viewer to take a moment to consider what is actually going on in the piece, particularly in regard to gender identity and the ways in which one takes normative social tropes for granted. This moment of consideration opens an opportunity for the viewer to consider intersections of identity outside of societal norms, expanding upon proscribed notions of gender identity and creating visibility for those who do not fit into the binary.
