Drama students at San Joaquin Delta College present Orwell's classic '1984'
Delta Drama presents '1984'
April 18, 2019

STOCKTON — The Delta College Drama Department is back with a new production of George Orwell’s “1984,” one of the most widely referenced and best-known fiction titles of all time.

The free production will take place at the Tillie Lewis Theatre on the weekends of April 26-28 and May 3-5. Friday and Saturday showings are at 7 p.m. with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Due to violence and adult situations, parental guidance is suggested and children under 13 are not admitted.

Seating is limited and patrons are advised to arrive early. Free tickets may be reserved online, by phone at (209) 954-5110 or in person at the Box Office. The limit is two tickets per person per performance and tickets will be held at Will Call on the day of the show. In order to give every patron an opportunity to see the performance, all free tickets will expire 10 minutes before a show starts and empty seats will be given away.

"1984" has sold over 30 million copies worldwide and has been translated into more than 65 languages. Orwell’s classic novel about a dystopian future where critical thought is suppressed under a totalitarian regime came sharply back into focus after November 2016, reaching a stunning 9,500 percent increase in sales and returning to the bestseller list.

The authorized stage adaptation demands some comment, and it could be summed up by Orwell himself: "I do not believe that the kind of society I describe necessarily will arrive, but I believe that something resembling it could arrive."

This production depicts the horrors of man's fate in a society where Big Brother is always watching—where everything that is not prohibited is compulsory. It is a theatrical event that is both powerful and disturbingly provocative.
