Visions In Clay
September 4 - 21, 2018
Don Williams
From Anasazi cliff dwellings to oil refineries and abandoned buildings, my dreams are inhabited by architectural objects. Lines and planes intersect and overlap to form structures, Walls enclose space and mark boundaries. The pieces I make a draw from this imagery. They reference places remembered and imagined.
Sacred Places 2 is inspired by spiritual sites visited over the years, places steeped in tradition, culture, and ritual, built to bring people closer to the spiritual world. The experience of entering one such place, an underground sanctuary carved deep inside a Colombian salt mine, still resonates with me after forty-six years. I hope to embody the enigmatic nature of such places in this abstract, architectural vessel, structures both spare and opulent, profane and reverent, that have born witness to the forces of change and the passage of time.
