Visions In Clay

Revisions Underway came from an idea about balance, and precariousness, and the threshold between them. Physical prowess was considered an art in ancient Greece – even subsuming sexuality. The gymnast uses strength and grace to hold a one-handed handstand: a form and position that, of necessity, lacks visual symmetry but is exactly perfect for the intention. The resulting stillness is an illusion. In fact, every muscle is working hard in the moment, continually revising the firing of nerves, to achieve and hold that illusion. Balancing our human relationship with the earth is similar: momentary, shifting, illusive, precarious. How long can we hold this balance? Drilling ever further into earthly resources, our reliance on and extraction of petroleum will eventually reach the limit of endurance.
(Installation note: drum is used as a pedestal. The figure is not attached to the drum; it easily self-balances on top. Artist will bring drum and figure into gallery and arrange the loose ceramic pieces. Once assembled, the entire work can then be moved to its final placement by one person/gallery worker. Move with one hand holding the drum rim, the other hand steadying the figure at the pelvis. Best to slide the whole unit, but if it must be slightly tipped, be cautious of loose ceramic spilling over drum rim.)
