Visions In Clay

Symbols and metaphors are the language of the unconscious, and are rife throughout my sculptures. In my work, symbols and metaphors serve as a mythological entre’ into serious themes of the nature of the soul and the interconnectivity of all life. Blurring the lines between reality and fantasy through symbolism and metaphor can be profoundly heard in ways that words cannot. When I’m in process of work, most often I have visions from the unconscious before sleep or just after awakening. Then, as I attempt to bring the idea into reality through sculpting, the idea may somehow be altered, as if the clay is telling me what to do.
I’m intrigued by the hero’s journey, cultural mythologies, ancient symbols, folklore, and of course, dreams. Shakespeare said that art is a mirror held up to nature. I believe that the nature he spoke of is our own nature, and that the symbols and metaphors found in art refer to something within us. My intent is that my work speaks to the viewer, allowing them to catch a glimpse in that fabled mirror.
