Contemporary Portrait Photography 2019
Gary Zuercher
I am originally from central Illinois. In 1961, I traveled to the deserts of the Southwest and the state of California for the first time where I was fascinated by the colors and textures of the desert and the surfing culture of Southern California.
I attended Bradley University School of Fine Art from 1964 to 1967 studying Sculpture with Nita Sunderland, Printmaking with Dow Mitchell and Design with Robert Hansen. I moved to Southern California in 1970 and have lived there ever since. My fascination with the beauty of the deserts and coastline and the diverse cultures of California have provided my artistic inspiration for many years.
Urban areas are so different at night they barely resemble their daytime entities. Night photography in urban areas requires a sturdy tripod and the ability to photograph people who usually do not want to be photographed. The subjects are often motion blurred, adding a sense of mystery and a record of time passing, however brief.
