Student parents at Delta College will soon be able to register for Delta College classes earlier, thanks to a statewide change intended to break down barriers and help these students succeed.
This change, known as "priority registration," applies to students who are parents of a child under 18 years old, for whom they provide more than half of their support. To be eligible, students will also need to complete orientation and a student education plan.
All students who meet those criteria and complete the required steps will be eligible for priority registration, regardless of immigration or citizenship status.
Student parents who are interested in priority registration at Delta College for Spring Semester should fill out the following form by Oct. 6: Student Parent Priority Registration Form.
"We believe that your commitment to both your education and your family should be recognized and supported," said Shawna Cortner, director of Admissions and Records at Delta College. "Your education is our priority, and we are dedicated to helping you succeed."
Priority registration was already in place for certain student groups, including veterans and students enrolled in various special programs. A U.C. Davis study in 2021 found that community college student parents have greater financial pressures and are less likely to earn degrees than other students; giving them priority registration will help them get the classes they need so they can reach their goals in a timely manner.
