Visions In Clay
September 4 - 21, 2018
Tiffany Schmierer
Schmierer creates assembled environments with a visual density of pattern, imagery, and detail. Rather than edit down to the minimal, she embraces the complexity of our visual culture. Her current work is inspired by the intersections between the natural and constructed landscape; the pulse of the city, with its organized and chaotic networks and systems, energizes her. Schmierer refers to her ceramic sculptures as three-dimensional collages, where she is layering of a chain of ideas to create a cohesive whole. Her finished pieces are an accumulation of fragments from which new connections can be formed.
Tiffany Schmierer received her MFA with an emphasis in ceramics from San Francisco State University. Her artwork has been exhibited in regional, national, and international exhibitions; selected venues include the American Museum of Ceramic Art, New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum, Crocker Art Museum, San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, John Natsoulas Gallery, Gallery Susan Alexander, Manna Gallery, Clay Mix Gallery, Pence Gallery, SMAart Gallery, The Clay Studio, The Potters’ Studio Gallery, Blue Line Gallery, Richmond Art Center Gallery, and The Artery. Recognitions for her sculpture include an Alameda County art commission, the First Place Jurors award at America’s Clayfest, a NICHE Award for ceramic sculpture, and the Alpha Award for best in show at the California Clay Competition in 2005.
Tiffany Schmierer is a Professor of Art at Skyline College in San Bruno, where she has headed the ceramics program for 11 years. She has also taught ceramics at San Francisco State University, Merritt College, Cosumnes River College, Cabrillo College, as well as workshops and community classes throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area. She lives and has a studio in San Francisco, CA.
