Visions In Clay 2019
Ianna Frisby
Traveling to foreign lands and experiencing different cultures previously unknown to me has provided a great deal of inspiration for my artwork. No matter how much one researches a place, nothing can quite come close to the immersive experience of living day to day and moving through a different space with intention.
Grotto was inspired by a trip to Belize where I visited a partially-submerged limestone cave not only filled with geological formations and bats, but used by the ancient Mayan to inter their dead. This cave was considered a gateway to the sacred underworld. It was there, in that space, we saw the well-trodden footpaths left by the ancient Mayan leading to the human remains and their funerary artifacts. A ceramic Olla Jar left nearby collected drips from a stalactite above sending echoes throughout the cave.
Beauty, Curiosity, and Wonderment have become my companions as I strive to create a similar experience for the viewer.
