STOCKTON – Delta College today celebrated the opening of a new outdoor exercise facility known as a Fitness Court, part of an initiative by National Fitness Campaign (NFC) to plan, build, and fund healthy communities across the country.
The Fitness Court, the first of its kind in Stockton, is located on the southeast area of the Delta College campus near Atherton Auditorium. It is free and open to the general public.
Delta was awarded a $30,000 grant by the National Fitness Campaign to help fund the project. Additional funding comes from Delta’s Strong Workforce Program, which seeks to inspire the community to achieve economic and social mobility through career technical education programs at Delta College, including Delta’s POST Academy which uses the Fitness Court for physical fitness training. Delta’s Black Faculty Task Force also played a key role in the project.
San Joaquin County faces health challenges, with historically underserved populations facing disproportionately poorer health outcomes.
“Delta College sees fitness and wellness as a major priority, and strongly supports the efforts of National Fitness Campaign,” said Delta College Superintendent/President Dr. Lisa Aguilera Lawrenson. “We are proud to support this program and join hundreds of leading organizations nationwide prioritizing prevention and community fitness.”
The Fitness Court, referred to as “the world’s best outdoor gym,” allows users to leverage their own body weight to get a complete workout using seven stations. Created with people aged 14 and over and with all abilities in mind, the workouts are adaptable for all fitness levels, allowing participants to move at their own pace. Users also may download the free Fitness Court App which acts as a coach-in-your-pocket and enhances the outdoor gym into a digitally supported wellness experience.
“We are excited to have Delta College join us in the journey to health and wellness as we make a positive impact building healthy infrastructure across America,” said Mitch Menaged, founder of the National Fitness Campaign, a nationwide wellness consulting firm that partners with municipalities and schools. “The addition of the Fitness Court along with digital wellness programming demonstrates a tremendous commitment to the health and well-being within the community.”
