Visions in Clay 2025
Joe Schumacher
Joe Schumacher is a multimedia artist and retired art educator whose primary focus is ceramics. After thirty years as a high school Fine Arts teacher, Joe found his way to the ceramics program at Sacramento City College. For the last seven years, Joe has been a steady fixture in the ceramics studio at SCC. His involvement in the classroom has been rewarded outside the classroom as well. Joe’s works have been included in exhibitions such as Feats of Clay, The Placer Arts Council Competition, Visions in Clay, The Pence Gallery—-Small works Exhibit, The UC Davis—International Mask Competition, The California Conference For The Advancement Of The Ceramic Arts and recognition in multiple SCC student exhibitions.
Joe’s works are often times whimsical in nature reflecting on past experiences or shaped by a sense of humor honed during his 30 year career in public education. Whether a hand-built sculptural work or a wheel thrown form, Joe’s works display a focus on creative expression, a strong understanding of design and the importance of functionality.
Have you ever flown over any of the agricultural areas of the Midwest? Have you ever done this when the moon is full or nearly full? “On the Night Flight to Wichita” recalls just such an experience. With family ties to Wichita and making numerous trips for holidays and other occasions, Joe recalls his experiences of looking down from an elevation of 30,000+ feet onto the moonlit patchwork landscape of the Kansas farmland below. Rectangular plots and circular areas defined by the rotation of irrigation systems are represented by a mosaic of iridescent Raku fired tiles.
