Emmie Wells discovered a passion for ceramics at a young age. She graduated from the State College of Florida and later attended the University of South Florida, where she earned her BFA with a focus in ceramics and sculpture. Emmie currently lives in Sarasota, FL, where she is an active member of the local artist groups SartQ artist collective and Friendly City Foundation’s Art Club. She has also taught at the Sarasota Art Museum’s Continuing Studies program. Emmie has appeared in a number of shows in the Tampa Bay area, her work focusing on flora, fauna, and the natural world. Emmie finds inspiration everywhere around her, and is continuously seeking to push the limits of ceramics however she can.
My work is born from a fascination with the juxtapositions in nature, of the dark and brutal against the bright and vibrant. The natural world contains a collection of chaos, delicacy, rot and beauty. I find myself drawn to these aspects and unable to look away.
Through my work I find where the two meet, highlighting the beauty and the darkness of both. There is endless beauty in the fungus that takes over a dying tree, consuming it and turning it into a different world of life. On the other side of the coin, there is a darkness to the bloom that withers away as its life ends.
The natural world is fragile, chaotic and unpredictable, yet beautiful and nurturing. These are the ideas that push my work forward and inspire me to create. I hope my work leaves the viewer appreciating the thorns as well as the blooms.
