Amanda Barr is an artist, writer, activist and educator based in Waterloo, Iowa. She holds an MFA emphasizing in ceramics and glass, an MA in art history, and an MA in modern languages. She is currently an adjunct professor of ceramics and art history at the University of Northern Iowa and a part-time bookseller.
I use the brightness of neon lights, the fragility of porcelain, and the translucency of glass to express all the things I’ve been asked to hide. My work is meant to be uncomfortable: large glaring words, ceramics that fall and break, shattered forms pieced back together. Trauma is a disruption, disability a series of barriers and unceasing pain, so my work is created to be eerily beautiful but also destructive, destroyed, broken.
