Melodie Sidhu
Melodie Sidhu is a ceramicist and sculptor. Raised in the Central Valley, Sidhu is a Delta College alum and received her BFA at Cal Poly Humboldt in 2023. She is continuing her career in the arts at the University of Arkansas in fall of 2025 where she was recently accepted into the Post-Baccalaureate program. There she will continue developing her portfolio in preparation for Graduate School. As a daughter of immigrant parents from India, Sidhu’s work is heavily influenced by culture, tradition, and textiles from the region. Her ceramics reference historical vessels through formal elements such as form, design, and color. The tradition of henna has also played a significant role and influence in elements of design and motifs that are seen in her work.
“It’s Pouring” is a piece that is heavily influenced by historical vessels and formal elements of design from Indian culture. Some of my first influences of art were color and designs from various Indian garments and textiles. I was five years old when I visited India for the first time. I remember walking into the bazaars that were flooded with vendors selling colorful garments, heavily decorated jewelry, intricate pouring vessels and umbrellas made of fabric where each panel was dyed a different color and densely adorned. My family and I spent hours in each shop being shown garment after garment. Each one different from the other, yet all of them consistent in gaudy decoration. The actual shopping itself for hours was terrifyingly boring, but what kept my interest was looking at all of the different combinations of colors and design paired together. Next to the clothing shops I would see various brass teapots with long whimsical spouts and intricate handles. “It’s Pouring” is a reflection of all of my first influences of art. The form is directly influenced by historic ewers during the Mughal dynasty in north India and the slip-trailed designs come from my background as a henna artist. The umbrella lid is merely a personal infatuation with the decorative umbrellas more commonly seen during times of wedding celebrations. This piece is a combination of aspects from my culture that are exciting and attractive to me.
