Kevin Tracy resides in Bozeman MT and is pursuing an MFA at Montana State University, Bozeman. As an inter-disciplinary artist working with local clay his art expounds the concepts of “earth-flavor” into ceramics, painting and installation. His work has been shown nationally and he received the Surface Design Association’s Outstanding Student Award for 2021.
In my latest series I have begun to use wild clay from Montana as a pigment for painting. These paintings are slowly built up of various colors and combinations of local clays. Once dried the clay is carefully sanded revealing the hues and textures beneath each preceding layer. The resulting work reveals the intrinsic nature of clay and the essence of geological time. The work represents an allure for the earth, a romanticized rendition of the landscape in which one finds beauty in all its fissures, pits, and scars.
