CANVAS Migration FAQs

How can I start teaching with Canvas?

Faculty must successfully complete one of the five training options above prior to teaching live courses on this system.

Who will decide when I start teaching with Canvas?

This will be based on a number of factors, including whether you have successfully completed training, and whether you are comfortable migrating your content now or in a later semester (remembering that Etudes will no longer be available after June 30, 2018).

How long can I continue to teach with Etudes?

Etudes and Canvas will be used in parallel through June 2018, when our Etudes contract ends. After this time, Canvas will become the college's official Learning Management System for online instruction. This allows over a year for existing Etudes faculty to complete training and course content migration, the standard period used by most California Community Colleges.

Can I still take Etudes training?

SJDC is no longer offering Etudes training. With most of the California Community Colleges moving to Canvas, Etudes.org is only offering training when there is sufficient demand. Please visit this page if you wish to be added to the Etudes.org training waitlist.

If Etudes training is no longer offered, and "Etudes to Canvas" training has priority seating for Etudes faculty, how can I get training to teach online?

Your best option is to sign up for the online "Introduction to Teaching with Canvas" training offered through @One. Check the @One website often as new sessions are added regularly - but sign up quickly as they fill fast!

Is there anyplace else to get Canvas training, outside of Training Options 1-5?

Not that we know of at this time.

What happens after June 2018?

Training will shift from an "Etudes to Canvas" focus to basic "Intro to Canvas" and will continue to be offered on a regular basis to accommodate any faculty who wish to use this system.

Where can I get more info?

Watch for periodic email updates and please attend your Distance Education Committee meetings where these topics will be further discussed. Dates for these meetings will be announced through campus email.
