Why Choose Our History Program?
A historical consciousness and historical perspective are indispensible to the survival and proper functioning of our self-governing civic institutions. The people must be informed and have the intellectual tools necessary to process information so they can participate responsibly as adult citizens and residents. As peoples of different ethnicities interact with each other more frequently in the 21st century, understanding each other's past paves the way for harmonious and beneficial cross-cultural relations.
The skills developed in history courses include historical research and writing, the critical analysis of primary and secondary sources, the ability to differentiate between different historical interpretations of the same event, and the ability to communicate historical matter orally.
What Are The Degree Options?
History courses are designed to develop a strong base of knowledge and skills that will serve as a foundation for further study of history. Those who are pursuing a career may choose to complete an Associate in Arts degree and then transfer to a California State University (CSU) with a major in history.
What Can I Do With My Degree?
The American Historical Association reports that there are a multitude of careers for history majors including: advertising executive, analyst, archivist, broadcaster, campaign worker, consultant, congressional aide, editor, foreign service officer, foundation staffer, information specialist, intelligence agent, journalist, legal assistant, lobbyist, personnel manager, public relations staffer, researcher, and teacher.
