Chemistry is sometimes called the “central science” because it connects other sciences to each other, such as biology, physics, geology and environmental science. A basic understanding of chemistry helps you to understand the world around you and make better-informed decisions about what is best for you and society as a whole. Topics ranging from ozone depletion and climate change to removing hard water stains from your shower or cleaning tarnished silver all require a knowledge of chemistry.

Program Options

We offer introductory, general and organic chemistry courses for those planning to pursue careers in science, engineering, and health professions. These courses cover a variety of topics including atomic structure, chemical reactions and molecular composition. You and your classmates will learn a variety of lab techniques from simple heating of substances to the use of advanced equipment, which will prepare you for a hands-on career in the sciences.

Fulfill Transfer Requirements

All of our courses fulfill lower-division requirements at four-year universities. Our chemistry courses lead to degrees in science and technology majors, engineering majors, health science related majors and applied science majors. These majors include bachelor degrees in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Biology, Nursing, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Agriculture.

Fulfill General Education Requirements

Our chemistry courses (Chem 1A/B , Chem 3A Chem 10, and Chem 12A/B) fulfill General Education requirements. Chemistry 10 is a transferrable course to UC and CSU. These courses are also in the list of restrictive electives for the Interdisciplinary Studies, Mathematics and Science Option Associate Degree in Science.
