English Composition Courses

Remedial courses are no longer required for transfer-level English!

All students are now able to take transfer-level English immediately--without taking a remedial course first. We have made this change to help you to reach your educational goal faster.  We believe in you!

We no longer require students to take an assessment test because research has shown that a student's high school GPA is a better indication of his or her ability to succeed in college classes than any test. Research also shows that, regardless of GPA, students are far more likely to reach their goal if they take the transfer-level class right away instead of starting in a remedial course.

If you have not completed the transfer-level English composition course, English 1A, I encourage you to enroll during your first year at Delta or as soon as possible. Students with a high school GPA below 2.6 are eligible to take English 1A with a 1-unit support lab, English 95. Students with a high school GPA of 2.6 or higher can enroll in English 1A without the support lab. English language learners still have the opportunity to take ESL classes before attempting English 1A.

Finally, if you do not have a comprehensive GPA or simply want to discuss your options, I encourage you to visit a counselor. I would also be happy to answer any questions that you may have about your options in English or ESL.

Please feel free to call my office at 954-5151 or email me at sheli.ayers@deltacollege.edu. I hope you have a great semester!

English Composition Course Descriptions

English 1A

English 1A is a transfer-level, college freshman English composition course comparable to those courses offered by the state college and university systems. This course emphasizes college-level reading and writing skills, including the skills necessary to write a documented research essay. Taking English 1A during the first semester or year of college is highly recommended.

English 95

English 95 is a 1-unit Pass/No Pass lab course designed to support students while they take English 1A. The lab course immediately follows the student's section of English 1A and is taught by the same professor. The professor and one or more Academic Coaches provide feedback and assist students during class time. Although lab activities may vary, the focus is on advancing each student's academic writing skills. Computers are provided for hands-on writing and research. Students who pass English 95 but do not pass English 1A are eligible to retake English 1A without repeating English 95.

English 1B or English 1D

After completing English 1A, students who intend to transfer to a four-year college or university take either English 1B or English 1D. Both of these courses emphasize the development of critical thinking skills through reading, discussion, and college-level writing. English 1B focuses on the analysis of culturally diverse works of literature, while English 1D focuses on on the principles of logic and the development of students' abilities to analyze, to criticize, and to reach reasoned conclusions.
