The Academic Senates within the State of California Community College System are mandated to get involved in the following areas:

The Senate's primary function*, as the representative of the faculty, is to make recommendations to the Administration and Board of Trustees on policy development and implementation matters concerning:

(1) curriculum, including establishing prerequisites and placing courses within disciplines;
(2) degree and certificate requirements;
(3) grading policies;
(4) educational program development;
(5) standards or policies regarding student preparation and success;
(6) districts and college governance structures, as related to faculty roles;
(7) faculty roles and involvement in accreditation processes, including self-study and annual reports;
(8) policies for faculty professional development activities;
(9) processes for program review;
(10) processes for institutional planning and budget development; and
(11) other academic and professional matters as are mutually agreed upon between the governing board and the academic senate.

With these guidelines in mind, the Senate and its Officers established the following goals for the 2009-2010 Academic Year:

President, Janice Takahashi


  • Facilitate the professional development of the Academic Senate Officers by encouraging attendance at the Academic Senate Fall and Spring Plenary Sessions

  • Continue to coordinate the Faculty Internship Program

  • Provide leadership for the Full-Time Faculty Entitlement process for 2009-2010

  • Continue to review faculty equivalency requests

  • Provide leadership and assistance to meet the institutional SLOAC timelines and goals and revise the master SLOAC model

  • Continue to solicit Academic Senate input and participation in all academic matters of the college  and inform the Senate of college and statewide issues and events

  • Write a new Academic Senate President orientation manual to assist the new incoming Acadeic Senate Presidentthe master SLOAC model

 

First Vice President, Dr. Jeanne Marie Velickovic

  • Addreditation: Report and Evidence of Student Learning Outcomes Assessment Cycle 
    • Participate in the assessment of student learning outcomes.
    • Provide training to faculty on student learning outcomes and assessments if needed.
    • Help ensure that student learning outcomes and assessments are added for all courses.
    • Help review and revise program student learning outcomes and assessments
    • Help ensure that course and program student learning outcomes are integrated with institutional student learning outcomes
  • Board Policies, Administrative Procedures, and Curriculum operating procedures
    • Continue review and revision of all curriculum policies and procedures in 6000 series, including policies regarding general education, AP and IB
    • Develop new curriculum policies as needed, including policies regarding course repetition, deactivation of courses and student learning outcomes
  • Curriculum Calendar
    • Develop a yearly calendar with curriculum due dates
  • CurricUnet Training material and Curriculum Handbook
    • Further expand online CurricUNET training material and help screens
    • Update CurricUNET to comply with latest Title 5 revisions
    • Continue revision of Curriculum Handbook
  • Curriculum Training and Training Material
    • Provide training to discipline group chairs
    • Provide training to curriculum committee on Title 5 regulations
    • Provide individual training to faculty members on curriculum, as needed
  • Deactivation of Courses
    • Participate with Dean of General Education and Transfer to review courses not offered in 39 months
    • Administratively deactivate courses not offered in 39 months
    • Administratively remove pending courses from CurricUNET that have not been completed in a timely fashion
  • Degrees
    • Review degree requirement content of AA degrees
    • Help ensure that new courses fit in with existing or new programs and degrees
  • Discipline Groups
    • Update a list of discipline groups and discipline group chairs in all divisions
  • Ethnic Studies Courses
    • Develop criteria to designate courses as ethnic studies courses, to comply with Title 5 regulations
  • Green Curriculum
    • Assist faculty in the development of green curriculum 
    • Infuse current courses with sustainability elements
    • Develop criteria, and designate courses as “green”
    • Develop sustainability degrees and certificates
    • Provide training for the development of green curriculum
    • Develop a green curriculum website with resources for faculty
  • Streamline Curriculum Process
    • Further streamline curriculum process as needed
  • Title 5 Compliance
    • Help ensure that curriculum complies with Title 5 provisions, e.g. regarding work experience courses

Second Vice President, Dr. Joseph Bisson

  • Resolve policies and procedures issues and changes currently under review.
  • Expand faculty awareness and appreciation of the importance of faculty role in policies and procedures process.
  • Represent faculty interests in the area of policies and procedures as they arise.
  • Promote entitlements as prioritized by Academic Senate.

 

Secretary, Diane Oren

  • Find and train a replacement for position of Academic Senate Executive Secretary.
  • Clarify the allowable flex activities listed in the Chancellor’s Guidelines
  • Provide workshops specifically for faculty in the Professional Development Center to replace the program offered when there was a professional development instructor.
  • Promote faculty-led workshops encompassing a variety of topics to draw on the expertise of faculty members.
  • Continue monitoring the electronic flex reporting system.
  • Develop workshops and activities to promote the Green Program on campus.
  • Evaluate the sabbatical process and make adjustments where needed.
