MEN'S & WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD

Mustangs sent over 15 athletes on the men’s and women’s side to the historic and competitive Mt. San Antonio Relays on Saturday, April 13th. Brandon Adams, Antionette Brown, Briana Rhone, Karen Osjui, Octavia Duncan, Sharod Vickers, Travis Turner, Mike Lewis, JaraJavin Jones, Nicole Hoffman, Alex Knudsen, Rashai Johnson, Garrett Jacobs, Sterling Thomas, Khari Dobbins will travel Friday to compete Saturday against some of the best in the state. The rest of the mustangs will go to Maurice Compton Invitational in San Mateo.

Mustangs get tested with over 10 + 4 year schools and Junior Colleges in Northern California including a Japanese National Club. Michael Lewis a Sophomore Captain and a returning state meet qualifier in triple jump makes his presents known with a jump of 49’4.25”ft and a California Community College leader in the triple jump. This was Michael’s first opportunity to Triple Jump 2013 and he made it count. Michael also had a personal best throw in the discus with a throw of 127’4 ft. Notable marks and times for Saturday include Khari Dobbins in 200m dash with a team leading 22.32, Men’s 4x100m relay (Sharod Vickers, K’hari Dobbins, Brandon Adams, Bobby Bivens) with a Personal Best time of 42.88, Lourdes Rodrigues in women’s 1500m face with a personal best of 5:37.68 which is a 23 second improvement from 2012. Women’s 400m dash included 3 Delta College sprinters who all finished 1,2,3 in their heat with Octavia Duncan running a 1:00.64, Nicole Hoffman running a second place time of 1:00.65, and Karen Osuji running a third place time of 1:00.81. These ladies including with Rashai Johnson run their personal best in the women’s 4x400m relay with a time of 4:05.66 which is a 3 second improvement this year. Mustangs will travel to San Mateo for the Bob Rush Invitational on Friday.

 

Jack Albani Invitational, March 8th, 2013 @ Modesto College

Mustangs traveled to Modesto for a 209 clash on Friday at the Jack Albani Invitational. With 14+ Schools from across the Northern California Region this meet show cased some of the best talent in the State. Some of the Mustangs outstanding performances for the meet included Sophomore Sharod Vickers in the 100m dash with a winning time of 10.79 which is a lifetime personal best and the current leading time in the Big 8 Conference, Sharod also takes 5th in 200m out of 63 Sprinters. Outstanding Freshmen K’Hari Dobbins wins the 400m dash on Saturday with a time of 48.38 which is currently 2nd in the Big 8 Conference, Dobbins also helped propel the Men’s 4x400m relay team to a 3:21.37 and a 2nd place finish. Freshmen Ryan Bown takes 4th place in the Men’s 400I Hurdle race with a time of 57.91, Sophomore Aman Panni takes 5th place overall in Men’s Long Jump with jump of 6.63 meters, Freshmen tandem Will Kaigler and Austin Willis take 4th and 5th in Men’s Triple Jump. Sophomore Sterling Thomas takes 3rd overall in Men’s Shot Put with a mark of 13.15m and 2nd place overall in the Men’s Discus with teammate Stephen Whitemen taking 5th. Sterling also places 2nd place in the Men’s Hammer Throw with a mark of 173’7” with teammate Alex Knudsen with 4th place throw of 160’2”. Sophomore and returning California State Meet qualifier Garret Jacobs places 2nd in the Men’s Javelin Throw with a mark of 177’0” also with teammate and returning Sophomore and California State meet qualifier Mike Lewis takes 4th place in Javelin Throw with a throw of 148’8”. One the Women’s side the top performances for the meet included Sophomore Antionetta Brown in Women’s 100m with a 2nd place time of 12.61 she also took 4th place in 200m with a time of 26.41. Octavia Duncan takes a 2nd place overall in Women’s 400m with a time of 1:00.79 and current team leader in this event, Rashai Johnson takes 4th place in this event as well. Sophomore Nicole Hoffman runs a winning time of 2:26.10 in Women’s 800m run, Alejandra Alvarex takes 2nd place in the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 13:26.60. Freshmen Alexis Grandison takes 6th place in Women’s Triple Jump with a mark of  9.28m, Freshmen Philica Willingham in Women’s Shot Put takes 6th place with a throw of  9.13m and 5th place throw in Women’s Discus with a throw of 105’5”. Next Saturday the Mustangs with travel to Sacramento for the Hornet Invitational @ CSU Sacramento.

Mustangs get their chance to compete to their first visit to a 4 year campus on Saturday. The top performance include Sharod Vickers in the Men’s 200m dash with a 7th place time of 22.74, Ryan Bown in Men’s 110 high hurdles with a  7th place time of 16.44 and 6th place time of 56.77 in 400m intermediate hurdles. Glenn Smith in the Men’s Steeplechase  with a  9th place time of 11:44, Chaz Wilborn 5th overall in pole vault  with a jump of 4.25m, Austin Willis 4th  in the Men’s Triple Jump with a mark of 13.92m with fellow teammate Will Kaigler 5th in Men’s Triple Jump 13.52m as well. Sterling Thomas takes 4th place with a throw of 53.45m in the Men’s Hammer Throw. Stephen Whitemen 5th place in Javelin Throw with a throw of 48.99m. On the women’s side Antionette Brown in the Women’s 100m dash places 1st overall with a time of 12.57, Freshmen Rashai Johnson 4th finish is good for 12.90 in the Women’s 100m. Women’s 4x100m relay team consisting of  Octavia Duncan, Antionette Brown, Briana Rhone, Rashai Johnson runs their fastest time of the year with 49.48 and a 5th place finish. Alexis Grandison takes 4th place overall in Women’s Triple Jump with a mark of 9.72m. Freshmen Philicia Whillingham takes 9th in Women’s Shot Put with a mark of 10.13m and 8th in Discus with a throw of 33.67m. Sophomore Lourdes Rodrigues runs a personal best of 2:40.36 in Women’s 800m with a 1st place finish in her heat. That run is 17 seconds off her time from 2012. Mustangs will continue their success down the road as they travel to Modesto for the Jack Albani Invitational.

 

In the past seven years, Delta's Track and Field Program has had 10 State Champions and 14 NorCal Champions. Only two other schools in Northern California have done better.

On March 5, 2009, the dedication of Delta's new track was held in honor of long time Cross Country and Track & Field Coach Merv Smith. 

Merv Smith attended Modesto High School where he lettered in basketball, football and his specialty track.  He then attended Modesto Junior College where he lettered in football and track.  Merv transferred to San Jose State University and was coached under Bud Winters for three years.

Merv was the Head Track Coach at Yuba College two years prior to becoming Head Track & Field Coach at San Joaquin Delta College spanning 27 years.

Merv established running camps, featuring famous coaches, such as Art Lydiard.  He was a consultant for the St. Thomas Olympic Track Team. His wins included:

4 Northern California Cross Country Championships

3 Northern California Track Championships

15 State Individuals
