Library of Congress Call Numbers (LC)

Used for all Locations except Compact Discs

  • Books on similar Subjects have similar call numbers.
  • The call numbers listed in GoCat match the letters and numbers on the spine of the books.
  • The first 2 lines of the call number describe a Subject area in a letter/number combination (Example: Iraq--History).
    DS
    79
  • The third line is usually associated with the Author of the book (Example: Iraq--Persian Gulf War 1991 by Moore)
NOTE: The 3rd line is a "decimal number."
    DS
    79.74
    .M66
    1993
(Read .M66 as M6.60) For this reason: .M66 shelves to the left of .M7

    .H87
  • Sometimes, there is a fourth line, which is also a "decimal" number, and specifies an Author or Title (Example: Author=Balaghi, Shiva)
    DS
    79.66
    .H87
    B35
  • The last line is usually the year of publication (Example: 2006).
    DS
    79
    .66
    .H87
    B35
    2006
  • If an item is a part of a multi-part set, the last line may be a volume or part number.
